Our Time

In the musical stage production CLASSICAL QUEENS: Our Time, classical music, rap-poetry, and dance converge in an exciting theatrical experience that defies traditional orchestral norms. The show explores the untold stories of two groundbreaking Black female composers, and their unlikely friendship during Chicago's Black Renaissance in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Two Black female violinists, worn down by working in the Eurocentric classical tradition, travel back through time via a mystical river. They find themselves in 1920's Chicago and walk in the shoes of two Black classical music composers, Florence Price and Margaret Bonds. Their journey becomes one of emotional and artistic growth as their deepening bond teaches them how to love, build community, and find success in their field.
